QB-17 pic

Sat Feb 23, 2013 1:16 pm

This photo was taken at Holloman AFB sometime in the late 40's, or early 50's. It is an unidentified QB-17 and I can not enlarge the photo enough to read the data block. Who knows what happened to it, but it probably succumbed to an AIM-4 Falcon, Nike Ajax, or any number of tests:

Neat picture. I'd have to say early 50's with the fact there's a B-47 in the background.

Some time between 1953 and August 1959, last QB -17 flight at Holloman by 3225th Drone Squadron.

Does the color seem to orange?

It could be orange, but my guess is that it is red like the QF-80s flown out of Holloman at the same time. I think that Mav and Max are right on the time frame as well. Just wish I could get a serial!

This photo is probably from the 1955-59 time-frame. QB is configured for night intercept. B-17 in background is likely the DB that will control it. If at a Holloman, then the missile being tested is probably Nike or possibly Falcon.

An interesting side note....
My dad was one of the development officers for the Bomarc Missile at Eglin AFB. The last QB-17 was shot down by a Bomarc missile. You've probably seen the test footage. It is where the B-17 explodes, stops in mid-air and just falls in flames.
