P-43 Lancer surprise....

Sat Dec 15, 2012 3:58 am

Well its a not that Australian "find" .. yet? but its a WW2 Republic P-43 with P-84 nose intake under going wind tunnel testing

Now we see how early US jets developed somewhat.

How did that lead to the development of the jet era. Taking a modern jet and sticking on an old prop fueslage.
And, it never flew. Might as well just post links to every wind tunnel test ever done if that's your game.
Now, take the McDonnell XF-88. Now that's an interesting twist. And, that one flew.
And, because it was a supersonic jet-turboprop hybrid, a much more fascination of the jet development era in my opinion. Considering, what it later morphed into.

Wow Phantom, that's pretty harsh statement for a newbie. All he said was that he saw how some early jets developed. Take a chill pill and quit sniping people.

Looks like a ducted spinner experiment to me.

That's a fascinating photo. I think it looks a lot more like a P-35 or AT-12, rather than a P-43. It would be interesting to learn more about it. I don't think it's actually anything to do with jet engine testing though, as you don't see any exhaust section. Thanks for posting though, regardless.

Cheers,
Richard

+1 along the lines of the prototype FW-190 spinner to cut down drag on round motored airframes.
According to Baughers list, 36-430 was the last P-35A and was delivered as the XP-41, possibly the answer to two questions the I.D. in the picture and 'wonder what the P-41 was?'.

XP-41 it is.

Now mind you, this is just a guess. But I wonder if Phil's first pic posted of the XP-41 at Langley isn't an attempt to develop a successful ducted spinner system for the XP-44?

Before today, the only artistic impressions I'd ever seen of the XP-44 had a standard prop configuration. But check out the following vintage 3-view of a "P-44":

I'd go for a ducted spinner too. Wasn't one of the P-66s tested with a ducted spinner too?

Not quite a ducted spinner, just an extremely tight cowl.

Looks like Curtiss tried something similar with the basic P-36 as well.

That XP-42 has to be one of the funniest looking noses I've ever seen. Looks like some kind of fish...

Thank goodness they went with the P-40 instead.

It would be more fun to see the cowl off but the cylinder baffles still on that one-
