I agree! A great collection indeed. Hopefully I'll have a chance to visit some day.

What is the connection of the P-40 on display to naval aviation? The more airplanes the better, but this one stands out to me as being out of place.

It is done up in Flying Tiger colors to represent the 60 Navy and Marine Corps pilots that joined the AVG.

I was there in 2000 and really enjoyed the place. I hope to make it back there soon!

Very cool tour! The new Hangar Bay One is looking very complete now and exceptionally very well lit! I wish the buildings at the NMUSAF were lit as well as this building is.

Two questions:

- What is the yellow monoplane immediately before the N3N photos?

- What is the deal with the wing roots on the Zero? I noticed that when I was visiting a few years ago.

I've wondered that myself since I first saw it in 2005. That airplane is one of Bob Diemert's "restorations," which involved a considerable amount of imaginative use of non-standard materials and bits of other aircraft. Someone told me the bulges at the wing roots were fairings covering the ropes that pulled up the landing gear...and I'm not sure if they were joking or not!

These were taken before the aircraft was given its current (totally bogus) paintjob.

As much sense as having a Me-262 as part of the collection...
As for the Zero- In fairness it was recovered by Bob D, and 'restored' complete with a B-25 QEC and F-86 drop tank, but an outfit in Jacksonville Florida (Bootstrap or Blackhawk aviation-I cant remember which) restored it again before it went on dislplay at NMNA...

So, what you're saying is that the botched up mess at the museum was even worse when it came out of Bob Demeirt's (sp?) shop?

Yikes.

If that was the two-seater that sat at Pax River for all those years, the connection seems a little less tenuous as it would tell part of the story of postwar aircraft testing.

I've only seen it since it went on display at NMNA. It was part of the USMC collection at Quantico from 82-89 and at the Liberal Air Museum in Kansas from 89-91 before heading to Jacksonville... Does anyone have pictures of it from those locations?
