The passing of an era. One of my heroes and a great American passed today.
Rest in Peace, Neil Armstrong, and Godspeed.

No offense please as I know it was posted in another thread, but I just didn't like the title of the first post.

I watched and shared those steps with him as a 9 year old on a day off school, watching it all unfold on the grainy screen of a black and white TV, an event that captured the world's imagination, and truely represented mankind "stepping out of its own world" for the first time.

He shunned the limelight for many years, and as he is quoted as saying himself, he was just a man who did his job, but he will long be remembered for what he did, and how he did it,

and that it was he, who made that Giant Leap for Mankind.

- Rest in Peace.

His family said they had a simple request to people in memory of Armstrong's life.

"Honour his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," it said

RIP Neil,

I remember very well the very early morning wake up and sitting enthralled in front of the B&W TV and I think of it every time I photograph the Moon.

I was only alive for Apollo 16 and 17 and was too young to remember them either. But through reading dozens of books in my collection about Neil and the other early astronauts I am just as inspired now as the millions that saw it live. He's a hero to me both as a Naval Aviator and an astronaut. Always will be.

Godsspeed Neil Armstrong.

Jimmy Doolittle once said he hoped he would leave this world a little bit better place than when he came into it, he did. So did Neil.

Good luck on the rest of your journey fellow traveler of the heavens. And thank you, from all mankind.

Interesting analogy between Armstrong and Doolittle: Both were most famous for one specific moment in their lives, yet their contributions as engineers far exceeded those moments, but are far less known.

I was fortunate enough to hear Neil Armstrong speak to the National Space Club in 2008.

I hope they lower the flags for him...

He was my only hero(of my lifetime) that I never got to meet in person. I hope they lower the flag too.

When I heard, mine was lowered, as well as today, and will be till he is buried.

If you happen to get the chance, I heartily recommend a visit to the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum in his hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio. I've driven past it countless times on the way to and from the USAF Museum, but only finally got around to making the time to stop in a few years ago. The facility is beautiful, with architecture meant to evoke a pilot's wings (the dome in the center is a planetarium.) You can see everything in a couple of hours, bit it's worth the effort to visit.

And to keep our resident forum-topic-nazis happy, here's a warbird.

Speaking of the museum, I was pleasantly surprised to find these for sale in the gift shop. They were originally given away at Marathon gas stations during the Apollo program. Glasses for Apollo 11, 12, 13 and 14 were made, but in a bit of a sad commentary about waning public support for the Lunar missions, no glasses were produced for 15, 16 or 17. There was also a juice carafe with the first four missions on it, but I understand it's hard to find and expensive, since they tended to get broken more easily.

We had the first three when I was a kid, but one got broken. I inherited the two survivors when my mom moved some years back, and found a third at a flea market. Thanks to the Armstrong Museum I was able to complete my set, as well as get the bonus museum commemorative glass in the center.

Steve,
Nice pics. I have the whole set of glasses including the juice carafe. I didn't know where they were from 25 years ago, but the guy at the flea market wanted $5.00 for the set.
