I had the extreme pleasure of making the trip to Moscow for this show. It was an event that will probably rank as one of the best airshows of the decade. To see so much Russian hardware was simply awesome.

Here are a few shots of the warbirds from me; both the Russian based and the Western European based that had made the trip.

I see one MiG-3 in Liberator's link and a different one in gspinks's photos. Are both of them flyers?

As can be seen by the photos, some of the warbirds that attended made some epic journeys to get there - the HAC Hawker Hurricane (for which HAC provided updates on their Facebook page when it was being flown over) and Plane Sailing PBY all the way from England, the French-based P-51D, P-40N, and Avenger, as well as the Austrian-based Red Bull Corsair and B-25, to just name some. Mikael Carlson also brought a few of his antique aircraft to the show, all the way from Sweden (Tummelisa, Bleriot, and his Fokker Dr.1 (flying again as of this past April).

I've been curious about the MiG-3 "White 1" photographed static as well. I have seen a lot of photos of that example (more recently now with the spinner painted white), though I have never seen it photographed flying. Unlike RA-1563G and Jerry Yagen's, which are both powered with Allisons, this one is fitted with an original Russian AM-35 engine.

Great to see Russia and the west now having such good co-operation and this allows historic warbirds to fly in Russian airshows - something Stalin would of never allowed. It is maybe a sign that future airshows could bring in more western aircraft to show people the history of flight... anything like this i think it is a great move towards common sense and sharing the worlds history. Cold War is over and tho mild on edges due to other reasons, it is good to warbirds are playing a part in opening up the former Russia.

This particular MiG-3 has not flown to date. The owner decided to take on the final stage of the restoration himself, rather than leave it with Avia Restoration. He seems to have found it challenging and hasn't made much progress as I understand it.

So wait... we have three Mig 3's now? Two flying and one hopefully soon to be flying?

Warbird Kid, unfortunately only one of the three are flying at this time (the one pictured in Geoff's post/photos - RA-1563G). Jerry Yagen's MiG-3 also flew quite a bit when it was still in Russia (it was the second example completed), but shortly before being delivered to the U.S. it was involved in a ground loop (and reported repaired), though over the last several years it has been reported to be having the hydraulic and other internal systems redone to better standard - it hasn't yet flown in the U.S.

This seems like a good time and place to again share these pictures of Yagen's bird while being test flown in Russia. All of these pics were provided to me by someone close to the restoration who wanted to share them but did not have a Photobucket account or the desire to get one. I'm sorry but I do not remember his name or just exactly how he was involved with the aircraft. If anybody has info on who that person was please provide it so that proper credit is given. They are stunning photos of a really unique bird and I can't wait until it is back together and flying again. (Even if I probably will never get to see it in person!)
