They've only made 1200 in 50 years? I would have thought for some reason the Army would have had at least that many currently serving.

Many (if not most) of the ones currently serving are rebuilds of older airframes (Bs to Ds). IIRC, some of the "new" ones will be rebuilt Ds.
They rebuild them and slap new FY serials on them.

The C model I crewed in 'Nam was rebuilt as a D and eventually went to Korea. It was still there in the late '80s. I wouldn't be surprised if it was rebuilt again.
