Boy raises $25,000 for WWII vets, city fines him for his efforts

in Featured Article, War Articles / by Jack / on August 14, 2012 at 09:11 /

A Chewelah student who has raised more than $25,000 dollars for World War II Veterans is facing a hefty fine for his good deeds. 12-year-old Justin Peterson holds fundraisers year round for the Honor Flight Program. Last Saturday, he held another fundraiser at the Chewelah City Park. While selling hamburgers, a health inspector stopped by Peterson’s booth and fined him $170 for not having the proper food permit.

Peterson said, “She charged us for it and I was kind of sad. I was just trying to raise money for vets.” The Tri County Health District said the inspector was only following policy. Administrator Dave Windom added, “You don’t want someone in the field making judgment calls on what they consider a worthy cause and cutting people slack. It opens the door for accusations of favoritism.”

The Health District isn’t forgiving the fines, but board members have agreed to pay them off using their own money. Windom said, “Because of this particular cause and our board’s personal connection to this cause, we thought this could be a good case where we could help with that.” Peterson said he is glad to make a difference in the lives of our veterans. “It’s kind of cool and it’s kind of cool to know I’m inspiring other people.”

You can help donate to the cause and send veterans to Washington D.C. Peterson sells Honor Flight wristbands for $5. Email him at jp4vets@yahoo.com.

I saw that story on a local news website.
Moral of the story:

Mayberry is gone, torched and bulldozed by "one size fits all" bureaucracy.

Common sense is gone...replaced by big government trying to protect us, even when we don't need, or want it.

Gee, Jack, seeing as how the board payed the fine out of their own pockets for he boy, maybe it's :Government is made up of human beings, and they often try to do the right thing...

I dunno, makes sense to me. Let one kid get away with breaking the rules, and the next kid with a good excuse demands the same thing, and then some guy with a football team wants to get them jerseys, and decides to sell hamburgers, and points at the two kids who got away with it, and then everybody starts whining...I guess it's better to get the whining done here on WIX than there in the boardroom. :P

So instead of making comments that make this somehow government is run amok, maybe just a nice job to the kid for doing what he did and to the board for recognizing it and taking care of the fine.

Jeez I get tired of the sky is falling mentality that shows up here some times. Instead of whining about what's not the way you like it, get out there and make a difference like the kid did.

Sorry to offend you..it's just that some of us like the concept of government serving the people instead of the other way around.

Re-read my post, I'm not advocating anarchy...just a bit of common sense/heart.
Obviously too much to ask these days. :?

So where is the lack of common sense in this news story? I'm not sure I'm seeing it. Maybe I should put my blinders on. That'll help. :P

Politics - It has become evident that discussions of a political nature cannot be done in an objective fashion about this subject that people are so passionate about. So, unfortunately, political discussion is prohibited as of March 19, 2007. You have been warned, so anybody who posts a political post or baits a political discussion will be banned for 30 days, repeat offenders will be banned permanently.

You're big boys. Leave it out.

Thank you.

To answer your question/sarcasm/insult:
Simply put, it's a kid raising money for charity...not a commercial resturant.
Simple enough?

That's all. I'll be a good boy.

Politics never leads to good, productive discussions on forums like this. Everyone is passionate about thier beliefs and this topic leads to flame wars and ill will. There are plenty of forums out there that specialize in discussions like these. Please find one and take these topics there and please stop bringing them here. Thanks.
