Slides found in a dumpster, dusted and scanned as best one can from slides that are scratched, faded and placed in frames that are sometimes glued together . .

The forgotten war, Congo 1960-64.

These pictures have a story.
I can’t resist looking in garbage-containers, it is just unbelievable what goes to the wast-incinerators – when a person dies (or gets a divorce) sometimes all that persons belonging is simply thrown away.
I picked 250 slides out of a container a few years back – sorted them in three parts: 1 aviation-related, 2 railway-related and 3 purely personal, vacation and family.
I have just now scanned 35 of the best of the aviation pictures. The pictures obviously belonged to a danish soldier who has served i Congo with the UN. Denmark was heavily involved in Congo alongside a score of other nations.

The ONUC was established in July 1960 to ensure the withdrawal of Belgian forces, to assist the Government in maintaining law and order and to provide technical assistance. The function of ONUC was subsequently modified to include maintaining the territorial integrity and political independence of the Congo, preventing the occurrence of civil war and securing the removal of all foreign military, paramilitary and advisory personnel not under the United Nations Command, and all mercenaries.

These pictures shows a tiny glimse of the multitude of forces, that were involved in the operations between 1960 and 1964.

I will try to find a permanent home for these pictures, in a museum in Denmark or with a veterans-society, if such a thing exist.

If anyone who sees these pictures can provide dates, places or can suggest a reciever in Denmark for the pictures, please let me know. With these pictures I send my respect to all the people serving with international forces to make and preserve peace around the world.
