Long, long gone-

I think two full airframes went to museums and some major parts/components went to other restorations/museums.

I crawled through them and retrieved parts for three B-29's back in 1982 or 83. One I recall was quite complete inside including the turret electronics but the corrosion was severe. The poor old gal. several of her parts still survive though.

I have photos buried away somewhere...

The NEAM B-29 came out of Aberdeen, with the tail section from a different Aberdeen airframe.

NEAM's was one of the first, if not the first to escape as a whole airframe. They retrieved it during 1973 I believe.

They are still there because years ago when certain groups were authorized to salvage one, they not only took the one they were allowed to but were stripping parts and pieces from others sitting there. Finally the powers that be put a lockdown on any more recoveries. Google earth shows them but you have to search real close and in a wide area. I was told that the Naval museum has all the rights to what is left there. And any decision regarding what is left would have to be made by them (good luck)!

I think the one at Tinker in OKC came from Aberdeen as well.

And as for the China Lake birds, why worry about them while there are so many B-29s in complete shape sitting outside all over the country at AFB? The China Lake ones, I believe, will be recovered eventually. But there's really not a big rush. You could probably have one for free if you had a hangar for it- the NMUSAF has recently indicated a preference for putting these under cover.
