Wellman, Gann, and having Andy Devine who was a pilot, helped with teeny but important details that were sort of 'throw aways' to most folks but register strongly with pilots, like Willy always trimming a teeny bit and Handy's addict like use of a VICKS nasal inhaler (when is the last time you saw one of those in a pilots pocket?), Moons reference to 'flying Fords and Stinsons' and all of them apparently being American Airlines line pilots as everyone semed to wear an AA cap badge.

My only quibble is of course the post war markings on the planes, but it is easily overlooked considering the story and the acting. I love Devine's labor saving devices. Sure looked like Fess Parker as copilot in some scenes, he never spoke so I can't be sure. I once knew a guy who worked at a field in California just after the war and met celebrity pilots like Devine and a few others. Wish I had asked him for more anecdotes before he passed.

You got it! Lots of fading stars and coming stars in this one, in addition to Parker, Allyn Joslin as Handy, Andy Devine, James Arness, Lloyd Nolan, Waynes pals Paul Fix, Harry Carey Jr, and 30's cowboy star Bob Steele, Walter Able, Regis Toomey, Mike Connors, and Carl Switzer (Alfalfa in the Our gang comedies) and tons of other 'I've seen him' bit part actors from the late 40's early 50's.
Since it was shot in the Winter of 1952/53 in the Sierra Nevadas the USAF markings were covered up as best as they could. The CORSAIR was landed on compacted snow and taxied to it's film spot, then the prop dept shoveled and bulldozed tons of snow in and leveled it to make the airplane appear to be axles deep in snow.
