P-51 Doghouse and airscoop

Fri Jul 06, 2012 4:44 pm

Hi, I'm heen to obtain a couple of doghouse and airscoops for a P-51. Battered and brunched is OK as we can re-work them. Anyone got some kicking around the hangar? Also a couple of canopy front bows (mine are blown-out) and a rear bow for a windscreen assembly.

Many thanks

You are just about 15 years late. Why do you think you can buy new doghouses these days?Because all the original stuff has been repaired or is on a plane.

Thank you gents, I am fully aware that the stuff is not as prevalent as it once was, I am also fully aware that despite what people would have you believe there is still a lot of stuff kicking around in both obscure and some not so obscure places. A large pile of the parts for the aircraft we have came from people who had incidents over the years but rather than go to the time of rebuilding their damaged bits took, in many cases the logical decision to minimise their down time, and brought new “off the shelf” with the result that the original damaged parts get put to the back of the hangar and forgotten about.
So yes, the stuff is slowly drying up, but there are still parts out there and it’s only by asking around that these things slowly see the light of day again.
There are some great companies out there doing some excellent work manufacturing new parts, and we’re using parts from these outfits as required, indeed our recently rebuilt fin and rudder which we rebuilt ourselves incorporate parts from a couple of shops in addition to some bits we made ourselves and a pile of original parts. However, the day we are forced to only buy brand-new parts from other people rather than do work on existing original parts ourselves will be a very sad one indeed in my eyes and the day I give up and take up golf.
Sooo, back to my original question, if anyone knows of any kicking around please do drop me a line.

Wow, the guy asked a simple question but once again nobody can give a straight answer without any attitude or sarcasm. GROW UP

Yak3,
You're right. Keep looking as there's bound to be parts out there. Just ran into a 3000lb stash of parts (non-mustang, sorry) the other day... all NOS.

Hang the Expense,
It's still out there...

Thanks Taylor, would be good to hear what you found recently in the 3,000lb stash. Always great to hear what turns up.

Another item we're after, in addition to the hoop for the windscreen (the part which the front hoop of the canopy buts up), we need the two vertical posts which run up either side if the armoured section of the windscreen. Again, we could make these as we have a full set of drawings on paper, but it would be nicer to find originals, even if it takes a bit of digging to find them.

Many thanks

Scanned drawings readily avail. I have a set on microfilm and a set on the external hardrive.
Works great to reference or produce parts.
There was an auction in the past month of a bunch of P-51 stuff in OK state.
Wonder who got that stuff or if it sold
Most of what you are asking for was listed in that stuff.

Would'nt hurt to ask C.A.F HeadQ. in Midland. Evey time I've been there, I've seen "cool stuff" in their parts area. All they can say is "nope" (Tex. for no) and this will prob. start a whole new Hornet's nest..Good Thing Tom R. did'nt give up on the XP-82! (Take THAT! NAY SAYERS!) :drink3: Parts is Parts. :D
