B-17 Sentimental Journey new engine issues?

Fri Jun 22, 2012 5:47 pm

I know that CAF's B-17, Sentimental Journey, was sidelined in Medford, OR, last week with a blown engine. I am wondering if they got everything resolved? I did not hear what engine was the troubled one. I assumed everything was in fine working order today when I saw the plane on final approach into Paine Field for a visit to FHC. However, as the B-17 touched down and rolled past my vantage point on the ramp at work (I work for Boeing on the flightline), I could see that the #2 engine was shutdown and the prop feathered... Anybody know what happened? Did the perform a 3 engine ferry flight?

No, no, no, that's not how the game is played. It can't be a first person observation, it has to be a friend saw or a friend of a friend saw (see teterboro thread) or a grainy picture (see any TIGHAR thread). Actual, personal observation reduces the speculation, and results in shorter threads.

Besides, we'd just confuse people if we only presented facts........... :D

Chuck, none of that matters, if you read it on the internet, then no matter what, it's true! :axe:

That's okay though. As long as someone posts a thread like this the life expectancy can expect to double or even triple.

Flying Heritage Collection posted on their facebook page that Sentimental Journey arrived at Paine field yesterday.

After a short delay, the CAF has made it to FHC at Paine Field in Everett. They will be here through Monday, June 25. Rides are available! For details visit http://www.azcaf.org/pages/touring.html.

And they posted this on Thursday.

The CAF’s B-17 is experiencing some delays. They should arrive at the FHC tomorrow, June 22, at about noon.

great posts so far! However, I am still wondering about why they would have landed with one engine shutdown and caged... Several of my coworkers, who are also A&Ps and very observant, also noticed this fact. We are all trying to figure it out. I'm thinking about heading over the FHC today and just ask in person...

We used to call it precautionary engine shutdown. I'm sure the term is still used. Probably not a big deal, something wasn't working the way it was supposed to or at least looked that way and they shut it down. Not even an odd occurence and certainly not worth getting all worked up about. B-17s fly just fine on three engines (even if they don't take off that way nowadays, as claimed in the other thread).

Even if they did have a real problem, it was obviously fixed with no problems because the rides are back on today.

But knowing the CAF like I did in the past, nobody on the plane will give you a straight answer. And I don't really blame them because the general public (meaning everybody that doesn't crew the airplane) doesn't need to know what happened.

OOPS. I should have answered this right away. Copper gasket on prop distributor valve was backwards affecting RPM. Shut down as a precaution. Problem fixed, all is well. No secrets.

That's good news then.

Doesn't Sentimental Journey have a complete top turret?

Haven't seen her up close in ages, but I seem to remember it being a complete turret when I was a kid hanging out around FFZ in the 80's.

I'm pretty sure she has the Lacy Top Turret and maybe ball turret. I know the CAF raided that bird for fittings at one time. Raided in a friendly way, with the owners permission.
