Update on Blue Max tripe? I know it's WW1, but WIXers SMART

Fri Jun 22, 2012 5:11 pm

I looked up the web site for the Blue Max triplane that was Found/rescued and I do'nt see any 2012 updates (I even emailed "Gen. Warbird" to see if he knew, but he told me he's busy looking in Asia for a Bearcat to hammer a 4360 on and win RENO! Man! He's Smart! ) anywho, I know the B.Max tripe is WW1 but I first heard/read about it here on WIX, so do'nt let me and the "Gen." down fellow Wixers! pop2

What I was told by the mechanic who came over to help assemble the remaining Blue Max planes bought in the early 1980s and based at Hartlee Field, Denton, TX was that the to two movie triplanes had been crashed and destoryed at some point prior. My 2 cents.

One of them spent many years with Robs Lamplough in England, and is now in France, I think it's the middle one in this photo: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Fokker-D ... 85fb9e1a0c

And the other one was floating around Southern California for years and is now back with Lynn Garrison: http://blue-max-triplane.org/

He may have got them confused with the two full-scale SE-5as, where were destroyed in two accidents in 1970: one while filming Zeppelin (SE crashed into a helicopter during filming of a dogfight, with the loss of five), and the other while filming Von Richthofen and Brown, during a dogfight practice with a Tiger Moth.

Lynn Garrison also has a couple of the 7/8ths scale SE-5as built for Darling Lili (in which the two full-scale SEs also appeared).

Daz - that is certainly possible, as I remember talking about the other planes we didn't get from the movie, and the Triplanes and full-scale SE 5s could have gotten confused. Thanks for that input. Randy
