b-17 left teterboro on 3 engines last night?

My friend was driving by rt46 in teterboro and said he saw the b-17 taking off on 3 engines. the left outer was not running? anyone else see that?

not a big deal, the manual tells how to do it and the plane operate at a much lower weight than they did in WWII.

feather the prop, remove a spark plug and pack a cylinder with rope, and your good to go.

Years ago, I was on the Collings B-24 and they shut down # 4 right after takeoff. I asked what the issue was and they told me the FAA requires them to have all four turning on takeoff and the engine could run for the takeoff but they knew all along they were going to shut it down as soon as the left the ground. I was surprised to read of a B-17 takeing off with one 3 engines turning after hearing that a while back. I guess i was misinformed back then? Clearly a B-17 is capable to taking off on only three engines, we all know that, I just didn't realize it was permitted...

I have no idea if what was done is legal, permissible, advisable, or otherwise. But it don't look good to the uninitiated, such as potential sponsors, potential riders, or the FAA. I'm not pointing any fingers, not saying anything bad, and not making any claims to superior knowledge. It just doesn't look good.

C-54s can do it and I've heard that a PBY could do a single engine T/O on water, don't know if I would want to do that.

I agree with Forgotten Field. I am not saying it wasn't legal, but that doesn't make it the best choice. This is a time that we need to be sure we are all doing everything by the book. Also that area is pretty unforgiving if they had any issues. This is the same area Sully decided to put down in the Hudson. Aviation accidents are a chain of events and by doing this you are adding two links before you have even left the ground. But that is all just my opinion.

I believe the Boeing 747 has a dispatch procedure for 3 engines.
Not sure if it includes revenue flying........!!

In former General Dale Smith's memoir of his time as CO of the 384 BG "Screaming Eagle", he describes an episode where they went to salvage his damaged personal B-17 "Screaming Eagle" from an airfield in Belgium where it made an emergency landing. One of the engines was shot up, so they did a three engine takeoff (I can't recall if they actually removed the damaged engine). The airplane slewed into the dead engine, making the takeoff quite an adventure. Then again, the 17 was likely still considerably heavier than the way they are flown today.

All,
I just got off the phone with the B-17 Flight Crew of the 'Yankee Lady' and everything is running great with all 4 engines on our aircraft. The aircraft did not take off with only 3 engines nor did they shut down any engines in flight. They have been flying a lot of rides in the New Jersey area and have had no mechanical issues.
Most likely an optical illusion or something but we are running fine.
