Interesting photos! All we need now are Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.

If the PBY pictures were properly credited, instead of just right clicked, saved and reposted by the owner of your photo account, they would be found to have originated with Life Magazine.

Several of these and good commentary about the Landseair project can be found on JDK's blog.

The LIFE magazine archive images continue to amaze all of us as they are released for general viewing and this series is typical of the fascinating photographs that have come to-light. Taken in and around this Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina - N69043 - owned by the Southern California Aircraft Corp. - specially converted into a Landseaire 'flying yacht', they purport to show just how the 'other-half' lived back in the Golden Days of the Fifties. The photographs were taken around February 1950 by renowned LIFE cameraman, Loomis Dean. The 'boat was lost in a crash at Sao Paulo on the 5th July 1953 carrying a Brazilian registration.

According to J Baugher's website, this was Consolidated PBY (Catalina) 34045:

The Thing is, Who are these people? I would love to hear their personal stories about their trips :supz: , all the drinking :drinkers: , and One can only imagine that there were new members of the mile high club  created during some of those …. flights :drink3:

In the late 60s-early 70s, Flying magazine had a story on a luxury PBY conversion owned by a wealthy businessman. It too, had a openable blister on one side and a "blown" unit on the other.
It's neat trick was a pair of motorboats that were winched up under the wing...backwards.

It had some neat nose art and the owner's wife did needlepoint pillows with the same design.
I wish I still had the issue, I'd like to know the N number and see if it's still around.

It wasn't a Dr. Bird 4-engine conversion.

BTW: It looks hot up there..hopefully the bathing beauties took care on the hot aluminum..and watched out for those exhaust stacks...ouch! 8)
BTWII: IMHO...The girl with the polka dot swim suit is even "hot" by today's standards...something not always the case with the 50's hair and clothes designs.

She'd be in her 80's today....hope she had a great life.

Before the mods remove that last shot - I didn't know women went sunbathing wearing tassels - or is that Bettie Page stopping by between shows?

They're called "pasties" now a days

And there are those girls who do indeed use them for a bit of 'artistic' tanning...
