April 28th- Kingsbury and San Marcos Events

Wed Apr 25, 2012 4:31 pm

I didn't see either of these posted in the Events so allow me to post in the WRONG forum... :axe:

Pioneer Flight Museum is having their Spring Air Fair this Saturday (April 28th) at the Kingsbury Aerodrome. (85TE)
Lot's of cool WWI and earlier flying machines there.
Might be a Ryan PT-22 and who knows what else?

And just up the prairie is the San Marcos (HYI) Bi-plane fly-in.
Same day- Same State- why not go to both?

What the hay- I am flying Moosejaw Belle (Fairchild PT-26) to both.

I wonder if they will notice that I am short a wing at San Marcos ? ...

Any other WIXers going?

Must of not improved down there as it was OK in San Marcos from about 9:30 on. Bunch of Stearmans ( the pretty biplanes) but not much else. They had a formation clinic there for bi-planes this week and they hung around to hawk rides. About 10 of the pretty bi planes one Waco and no Navy types.

The weather at San Marcos was 300 ft Ceiling at 0930 when I called for a weather briefing. (Translation- kinda pooky!)

Then there were the usual delays and we stopped at Kingsbury first. Then I had a hot re-start problem with the PT-26. As in it WOULDN'T re-start until it took a breather between flights. I HAD to have petrol anyway, so off to San Marcos we flew.

So the (shorter) long version is- By the time we got to San Marcos a formation flight of Stearmanzes was just landing and I couldn't get my camera out in time.
But I did get these shots on the ramp.
AND my buddy Col. Haskins was flying back in the same direction and he allowed me to continue my previously started formation training. So I got about a solid hour of two-ship work- holding station, change-overs, leading and being #2.
That formation bidness isn't as easy as folks make it look.

Actually it is a Nuwaco, they rebuilt from a wreck I believe. They are busy on 3 Wildcats now. Will be in Hondo May 19 with something. Mustang hopefully. He was flying the T-28 when I saw you last in Fredricksburg.
