The T-6 main wheel table is finished!

Sat Apr 21, 2012 6:08 pm

Hello again. I just finished the table for my garage made from a T-6 main wheel. This project was a hoot! Everyone who I met while doing this was a real help.

The wheel is mounded on the base from a desk chair and is supported by a piece of heavy duty automotive exhaust pipe. A glass tabletop finishes it off.

I want to thank on this for pointing me in the right direction to get the job done.

The table certainly looks nice, but since it's made from a T-6 Texan, it should have a Shiner Bock on it. :drink3:

Here are step by step instructions on how the table was made.

Please do not look at these photos until after you have consumed several beers… As that is the condition that I was in when I did the project... And in this country I have the right to be judged by a jury of my peers.

On a serious note, I know that there are many people on this site who do Real, Proper, and Professional, aircraft restorations… For their own sake, those people should look away at this time.

So how did you finally get the tire on?

Two automotive shops did not want to do it. I then took it to a small shop that fixes and mounts everything from wheelbarrow to semi-truck tires. They enjoyed the story about the wheel being made into a table, and moved the job to the front of the line. It seemed that everyone in the shop, including the sales clerk, came to the back and watched it being mounted. We had a real nice conversation, and we even discussed which side of the tire should face the top of the table. The mechanic used their large machine and eased it right on. In the end, they charged me six bucks for the job.

Looks great. I have a b-17 windscreen that I use as a table top. Boy is it heavy!
