1/4 scale P&W Turbo Wasp display engine

Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:15 am

Have any of you come across a JT3D-1/TF-33 display engine like this? There are no tags that say who made it. I have done an internet search and found nothing. I'm wondering how rare it is and what it may be worth.

Probably done by/for P&W as sort of a 'salemans sample' to help explain the 'cool stuff' in the engines 'all new' design without having to drag a real, 6800 Lb. JT-3 around (Imagine checking THAT @ the counter) and also as a potential training aid for pilots/mechanics. Or for Sales display and Air Shows like Farnborough on a corporate stand.

I've read in a couple of different sources that when the guy from GE showed up @ NORTHROP to show off the proposed J-85 for the T-38 NORTHROP was developing with his display piece model, he was asked 'so, just how big will the real one be?' his reply ''That IS full sized'.

Ya, we have a 1/4 scale GTF engine at the Pratt & Whitney exhibit at MRO Middle East right now.
And in your front office and such.
Not sure who made them.

Where did you find it?

I'm not sure where my friend found it. They've had it for at least 15 years or more. I think it was made to be displayed at aviation shows and such. it does have a power cord, so i think it's supposed to rotate, but have not tried plugging it in to check. The can't be that many out there. It reminds me of what you would see in a museum.

Plug that puppy in! It's probably got some lights inside and may even have red or orange bulbs for the turbine section and it would be fun watching all those blades go round and round :D
