Biography
Commander Frederick J. Jack Slyfield, USN, 84 of McGregor, Iowa died Thursday, 12 January after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Dawn D. Slyfield of West Union, his sister Julie Setterlun of Prairie du Chien, his daughter Shannon J. Silvestre of Houston, Texas and his son, F.J. Skip Slyfield of Park City, Utah. A combat veteran of World War Two, Korea and Vietnam he retired after 26 years as a Naval Aviator. He returned to his beloved Mississippi river and hometown of McGregor to start his second career as an Industrial Arts teacher at Mar-Mac High School. He spent 15 years on the Mar-Mac Rescue Squad as an EMT for Clayton County. He served as Mayor of McGregor in 1998.
Memorial visitation with the family will be Saturday the 21st of January, 2012 at Thornburg –De Vries Funeral Home 625 Main McGregor, IA from 1PM till 5PM. Inurnment services with military honors, Warbird fly-overs and multiple celebrations will be Saturday, the 26th of May, 2012 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor.
