Wanted: C-47 R4D DC3 tail in junkyard or scrapyard

Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:44 pm

Wanted: C-47 Tail Section. I have the first 13' of the cockpit and the last 10' of the tail. What I am looking for is the 6' or 8' section of the cargo door area. Anyone know of one available?

Google Earth and go to Boeing Field in Washington. At the southwest end of the field there is one sitting there with wings off that had been used as training for the airport :drink3:

There was one in an Albuquerque scrapyard a few years ago. It apparently bellied in, and the idiots that lifted it, put the straps around the fuselage and bent it. So then they put the straps under the wings, and bent up the flaps & trailing edges.

It sat at the International Airport for years until the Libtard mayor decided it was a unpleasant for him to look at, and demanded it removed. He also had a old twin, possibly a Lockheed or Howard DGA, removed as well.

Both were dumped at a local metal recycling yard. I'll see if they are still there.

Update - neither are present, apparently crushed and melted down.

The DC-3 behind the MoF in COOPER 9411's post is like a lace tablecloth. It's a very old outside display that sat on the ellipse of the MoF for decades in semi correct post war ALASKA AIRLINES colors, mostly rattlecans (and it was no 100 pointer when the MoF got it). Seattle weather isn't condusive to long lived aluminum ( higher than normal humidity salt air, cold, snowy Winters, cool wet humid Summers, lots of rain, lots of wind) and a DC-3 is not a good example of weather tightness in any case. The airplane was removed when a visitor stuck his finger through the skin while poking it. I doubt it could be lifted and not crumble like old corn bread. You'd get home with a shoebox full of gray powder and a few flakes.
I'd be cruisin' Mike Henningers latest postings to see what is working on it's tan in AZ. or CA.

You might try contacting Basler Turbo Conversions here in Oshkosh and see if they have any parts they would be willing to let go.

There was a thread (can't find it) about 4, DC 3 / C 47 in missouri being scraped due to wind damage. Have they been scraped??

There are three Goonies left at Viechy at my last visit...actually there are four, one of the four that were moved by the tornado has been trucked out...not sure which one. Baron Aviation is the contact there.

steve, the 4 dc3's are in Rolla MO, 3 are in the field rotting, 1 is on the ramp looking good, and as of today I saw a s-2 Tracker there as well. I'm a trucker and go into Belle MO bout once a month to get charcoal, I get to drive by this airport in and out.

I don't know who it is, but they like radials.

There used to be a pair of the long bodied/square-tailed ex-Millardair R4D/C-117s parked in the grass at the Brantford, Ontario airport. I doubt either one will ever fly again and I had heard rumours the city wanted them gone. This may be a place to start looking if the cargo door area is the same as the earlier models.

A couple places in Florida you can check

One would be Opa Locka Florida (North Miami), where there are still DC-3/C-47 cargo operators that still operate. There are a few C-117s parked on the north ramp that haven't moved in years that look to be getting parted out.

Another place is the Shell Creek Air Park, which is on the west coast of Florida about 10 miles east of Punta Gorda (or about 30 miles North of Fort Myers). There are RD4 parts lying around the airfield as well as a couple C-47/RD4s in almost flying condition that are being worked on to be restored. I saw 4 or 5 that will never fly again and are just in parts. These RD4s used to fly for the Charlotte County Mosquito Control
