Warbird (Wildcat?) at Libertyville or Half Day, IL in '60's?

Tue Jan 03, 2012 2:26 pm

Hi All,

Talking with a buddy over the holidays he recalled seeing a warbird--quite possibly a Wildcat--at either the old Libertyville airport or Half Day airport near Chicago, IL, back in the late '60's or early 70's. Note that it was not this Wildcat at Palwaukee Airport (which he knew about...the one that ended up at Earl Reinert's Victory Air Museum)...

...but instead, another airplane he's trying to recall.

Does anyone have any recollections of what bird this might have been? Photos? Anything at all that might help us figure-out what he might recall seeing?

Thanks for your help either way...

It was the Hellcat that is now in the AIR-ZOO. In the early 60s it was being modified to do aerial photography by John Ortseifen(?). I remember seeing it at the Chicagoland Airport- Half Day IL. Not sure if it was used much.

Many thanks Mark; sure appreciate the info on that!

Anyone out there have photos of the airplane during that time period?
