I need a flying 707. Seriously.

Mon Oct 17, 2011 1:22 pm

The NBC TV show "Pan Am" just called and asked if I could find for them a flying 707--by the end of next week, believe it or not, that's how television works...--that could be quickly repainted in PAA colors and be used to film a show that involves it flying into Port au Prince. They'll find an airfield somewhere probably on the East Coast to stand in for PAP, but they want the airplane at FRG, on Long Island, by the end of next week.

No, they can't use Travolta's, they've already looked into that. His is too highly modified to stand in for a 1960s airliner.

And yes, I know there's probably no such thing as an FAA-legal 707.

I need a contact name and information, not just advice to "try Miami." Any ideas?

Warning, non-helpful response to follow:

Your job's problems sound a whole lot more interesting than my jobs problems.

Best of luck to you.

Is there even a 707 flying in the US now?

Re: I need a flying 707. Seriously.

I think the only commercial 707s left in the USA belong to Omega Air Refueling. http://www.omegaairrefueling.com

They might be down to just 1 707 after the other caught fire on take-off. Not sure if it would be useful for filming a TV show. http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-j ... 6868.story

Like others have said, I believe the only flying 707s in CONUS are heavily modified ones like the Omega Air Tankers and there was at least one other that was based at PHX and used for testing (not sure if even that is still there, but it was deinitely not suitable to stand in as an airliner).

Best bet is overseas....Africa or India.

I don't know how helpful-but isn't Quantas flying one in Australia? Is it the wrong model?

Iranian Airlines has one.

Boeing 707-3J9C

That and Omega Air's 707-330C

are all I can come up with

A DC-8 might be easier to find. Pan Am operated them too, of course.

These guys aren't brain surgeons, but they are go-getters and so are the people they have around them. Original operational 707s are probably about as common now as original operational Nieuport 17s. The nearest passenger 707 probably belongs to Travolta.
The wonders of CGI are beckoning to them. Either way, its weeks before anything happens. To understand this better I guess requires a brain surgeon.

Nice to see the world of film and television are still completely out of touch with reality

Travolta's one is their only option I would think.... or CGI.

What's the status on Lowa Limited's 707-330B N88ZL which IIRC, was still in PAX configuration 3-4 years ago....??

You're thinking of John Travolta's airplane. It's painted in QANTAS's famous V-Jet colors (which it was, when new). And yes, it is unfortunately the wrong model.

(BTW, for anyone who cares... QANTAS is an acronym and all letters should be caps... stands for Queensland And Northern Territories Air Service). 8)

I believe Lowa is still flying their N88ZL:
Lowa Limited
6750 NW 79TH AVE, 2ND FL
MIAMI, FL 33166-2779
(305) 591-0440

Just some days ago, the NATO at Geilenkirchen, Germany, phased out one of these used as trainer and transport. They have still another one flying which will be phased out end of this year.
