This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

So, we are making some great progress with our C-97 "Angel of Deliverance" recently. I think we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I am going to be redoing some of the FE panel and other placards etc, but I want to use the proper font. Boeing uses some kind of unique font for all the markings. Anyone know if that font is aailable online somewhere? I have a message into Boeing, but was hoping someone here could help. (B-29 guys?)
Also, any of you that have access to a C-97 that would be willing to go in the cockpit, go under the floor hatch and lift up the little door just in front of the ladder to take a pic of the placard relating to the emergency nosegear retraction/extension stuff? Our crank had an issue at one time and scraped the heck out of the placard. I cant read some of the words and was hoping someone could get me an image I could work with.
An example of the font and the placard are included below:

Thanks

I know they did use a font called 'STRATOTYPE' but I believe it was used for external surfaces on new aircraft and company logos, official letterheads, and building signage.

Search for 'art deco' or 'retro' fonts. That style of type was very popular during the 30's and 40's.

When you find out the name of the font please post it here.

I did find out. Its called Bernhard Gothic Heavy. Now Im either going to make a screen for printing or vinyl stencil. Not sure yet...
Check out what I have done..
Top is mine, bottom is original...

The image above is from a screen capture. The actual file is much much higher quality..

So, would anyone out there with C-97 cockpit access be able to help me fill in the blanks on this placard? The wording does not appear in any manual..

It looks like "FULL TRAVEL (INCLUDING FREE TRAVEL) 220 REV, but there doesnt seem to be enough space for the word "travel"
Also, the Caution : " Handle Crank with (Care?)"
Anyone?
Thanks..

Other than the words on the bottom being tentative....What do you think of this?

----Found a photo of this in the Maintenance manual... REd line says "DO NOT CRANK WHILE MOTOR ENGAGED"

Nice, but looks a bit pixally. Make sure it is at 300 DPI for printing.

Kevin,
I think you need to put the correct spacing between the words "FULL" and "TRAVEL", even if it moves the rest of the sentence over some. It looks funny with those two words close together with the large space between all the rest of the words.
Just my opinion.

Fouga, its pixelated because of the conversion I used to create the jpg for posting. The original file will not be pixelated.
RareBear, yes I see the spacing, thanks..
Most importantly, I need to know what words go in the bottom red stripe. I'm guessing "Handle Crank With Care"..
What I need is someone at Dover, NMUSAF, PIMA, Grissom or Solo's restaurant to go in their planes and get me the correct phraseology.
UPDATE: Found wording... "DO NOT CRANK WHILE MOTOR ENGAGED"
Thanks!

So, the ZC is still drying, but I couldnt resist setting the new placards on, if not just temporarily for now.

Now that I have this figured out, I can make some new correct labels for other areas..

Looks great! Where did you find the correct text? Are they vinyl decals?

Actually, Its "crack n peel" paper with laser printer and 3M adhesive. Next move is flat clear coat (yes, they make flat clear coat, I was happy to see) Several coats of that and it should be well protected.
I'm anxious to start redoing some of the crappy looking areas of the FE panel (Making vinyl stencils for that).
Where did I get the fonts?
www.myfonts.comThe correct text was in a maintenance manual. There was a photo of the panel and I was able to read it.
I dont have the ability to make vinyl decals yet, and I dont have the patience to screen print it, so I do what I can.

Umm yeah.... About that Boeing font.
Funny how I never noticed the words "Warbird Information Exchange" at the top of the page before..
Looks like the same font, but not Heavy. Bernhard Gothic..
Why did I never see that? The answer was right there before my eyes!
