Looking for A-10 photos

Wed Sep 28, 2011 8:30 pm

I'm in the process of making a major update to my line of A-10 prints, and I am seeking photo reference. I am looking for photos of the following unit's aircraft, particularly photos of the front port quarter. (The most difficult shots for me to locate of older planes are pictures clearly showing a readable name placard) Close-ups of any insignia on the port side are also welcome, especially nacelle art or tail flash. Here's the units I'm seeking:

78th TFS, 92nd TFS, 510th TFS, 333rd TFS, 356th TFS (if anyone has a name placard shot of plane number 666, that'd be awesome), and the 176th TFS.

Fritz, what are the sqn markings of these units and where were they based? I have a few A-10close ups from a local airshow in 1988 but cant lay hands on them right now. My local sqn leader is a retired USAF ordy who has loaded more than a few three-oh-Mike-Mike rounds. He may have some pix that you'd like.
Is there any particular time frame on these?

No time frame, I'm always looking. Most of the squadrons mentioned were with the 81st TFW in Europe. (Picture sources will most likely be in the UK) The 333rd(Lancers) was at Davis-Monthan. The 356th (Green Demons) was at Mrytle Beach. Also looking for pix of the 176th TFS "Badger Militia" in Wisconsin.

78th TFS, 91st TFS, 92nd TFS, 510th TFS were all 81st TFW at Bentwaters/Woodbridge.
As were the 509th and 511th until their move to Alconbury in 88-89 when the newly F-16 equipped 527th AS relocated from Alconbury to Bentwaters.

I was the penultimate PAO before the stand down in the UK 87-89.

I have some really so-so snapshots I took out on the line. But during my time, there wasn't any nose art, just squadron tail bands.

Anything you have is welcome. You can email me at barry at boomandzoomgraphics.com. Front port quarter details are gold to me...I always seem to get hung up trying to find shots with readable name placards. (The prints are detailed enough you really can read them. My art is printable up to about five feet across.)

BTW, anyone interested in A-10 prints, I have all the active duty units already available, plus a few recently inactivated ones. Visit http://a10warthog.boomandzoomgraphics.com for details.

I have 287 negs of A-10s. mostly in UK.
Here is one of 78 TFS at Culdrose 1989. Name plate appears to read Capt Ozzy DeSantis?
Next one is 510 TFS at Mildenhall 92. Seems to read Lt.Col James Elliott.
Have a decent port side of a 92 TFS at Boscombe Down, 1992 but don’t see a clear name. Haven’t scanned a lot of them in though.

Thanks! Can you make out the tail numbers of those hogs from your source photos? That would be of immense help.

Thanks! Most helpful.

Anybody, feel free to email me if you have anything. My ultimate goal is to have a print representing every A-10 squadron that's ever flown.

Fritz; Here are some of the IDs on the negs. I may mess up on TFW vs TFS #s, with some of these fast notes.
52FW; 57; 74 TFS/23 TFW; 104 TFS; 509 TFS; 76 TFS/23 TFW; 509 TFS/10 TFW; 23 TASS/602 TACW; 511 TFS; 355 TFW; 131 TFS; 118 TFS; & tons of 81 TFW without detail descrip. MOST of them have the specific aircraft numbers.

23rd TASS and the 81st TFW stuff would be of interest to me(especially the 78th TFS Bushmasters, 92nd TFS Skulls, and 510th TFS Pirates). I have stuff for the other units. Although ANY plane with a readable nameplate is worth having (assuming I can tell which aircraft the nameplate goes to): since I do custom work, and never really know what plane someone will ask for.

Heres' a view that I believe meets your criteria. The photo was taken at the Santa Rosa Airport, CA in Aug 2006.

This would be great, if the name placard were readable (it's not quite high-rez enough for that). Below is a graphic example of the sort of picture information I need. I already have art for all current active-duty squadrons, so while any photos are welcome (especially if they have a good name placard, ladder door art, or other choice detail), I am really interested in photos of the older hogs, and VERY interested if they feature close-ups or high-rez views of the indicated details. (If it's painted in the green Euro scheme, it's probably of interest to me)

The whole front port quarter of the plane is a gold mine of information. Every hog seems to have its own unique layout of warning placards, vent covers and even stars and bars, which varied on the older ones, so it's nice to see those kind of shots.
