Chris and Zack's Excellent Adventure

Thu Sep 08, 2011 11:03 am

As some of you may know Zachary and I took a pretty cool road trip at the end of last month. We took about 2 weeks on the road and met several WIXers. Here are the stats of the trip
16 states
21 aviation museum and sites
Over 7,500 miles driven
2 Veteran interviews

We plum wore out a GPS that came in the rental car. I was wondering if folks would be interested in seeing some pictures from the trip. I'd love to share, but don't want to be that guy boring folks with his vacation slides. :D

Jbell that is me in Warbird Digest with Zack, Rob, and the Haus family with the C-47. That was a great moment. Ok I will break this down into days. We departed Zack's house which is right next to the EAA Museum. Then we drove to North Dakota and to the Tri-State Aviation Hangar to visit with our friends there. Cindy and the gang are among the nicest people you could ever meet.

The folks at TSA are top notch. They also form more of a small family more than a work place. The amount of pride that they have for what they do comes across easily. We can not say thank you enough to them. This was one of my favorite stops. We then started the drive to Montana to do a P-47 interview with a 56th Fighter Group vet.

Nice stuff! Love to see the human side of the community almost as much as the planes themselves. More please!

The next day we drove into Montana and interviewed a WWII P-47 pilot from the 56th FG. Mr. McCauly not sure of the spelling and his wife not only welcomed us into their home, but after the interview cracked a few beers with us. Once again such great people. I am really glad we did this interview.

Then we drove up to Missoula to see the fire bomber and smoke jumpers at work at an active nearby fire.

Great photos of Montana! The one of the BNSF train struck me as being oh so kool.

Then we drove to Seattle to meet up with Al Saur (spooky the cat) and some of the other wixers and lurkers to check out the Museum of Flight.

This was the fastest fork lift truck thing we ever saw. It passed us at like 70 up a hill.

The Museum of Flight has such a great looking interior. Any word at all about finding space for the B-17 inside the museum at some point?
