Judging by what looks like a Co-axial cable going into the box, it is certainly a modern piece of equipment. Might be transponder, GPS, radio etc.

It really is the fuel pump suppressor! Part number 5C/870 for what its worth!!

Not modern at all, and an original fit part.

Hi C VIECH......As Bruce stated.....it is an original fit electrical system fuel pump suppressor. Nothing modern about it at all. Looks like Spifire MK V BL628's cockpit.

Sorry Gary, don't mean to be a tease! That is a photo I found on the net and I don't even know which airframe it is.

Now, to muddy up the waters a bit more. An Internet friend of mine happens to work closely with the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford. He took the question to them and they have categorically stated that it is not original wartime equipment. Hard to argue with folks who restore Spitfires for a living! This same gentleman also posed the question to an ex-Spitfire combat pilot who also confirmed that it was never in any Mark of Spitfire he flew. However, I don't know which Marks that may have been.
