ROYAL Canadian Air Force !!!

Here in Canada, our Defense Minister is about to announce the restoration on individual names to our Military Branches.
Back in 1968, the Liberal Gov. decided to merge all branches and call it the Canadian Armed Forces. While I am proud of our Military people, I for one have never liked the merge.
We now once again have the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Army.
These are proud names in our military heritage and it's good to see them back.

Seriously, great news. I grew up on a couple of ADC bases that had a Canadian NORAD continent. I always liked the force (and the Canadian people I've met.).
Now if we can just get them to put arctic red on the aircraft again (like the Mustangs) we'll be set.

Why isn't the Army Royal ?

It's the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. That's reflected in the Commonwealth countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada, where the Army is not 'Royal', but the air and sea arms are. IIRC, and I'm no brown-job expert, the Armies of those country are not Royal but the Regiments are. For instance it's 1 and 2 RAR for Royal Australian Regiment. I believe in Britain's case it's a hang over from the Army being the oldest military arm.

Of course the South Africans have never had a Royal South African Air Force but have always had the SAAF - I've guessed it has something to do with a slight unpleasantness there around the 1890s and 1900.

The SAAF always had Army style ranks and Brown (Khaki) uniforms.

Very nice bit of news. How much you want to bet that Nov. 11th this year our Air Force and Navy vets have an extra glint in their eye and their backs will be a bit straighter.

Nice work PM Harper, now get them their new equipment sooner rather than later and don't let the L(l)iberal a**holes slow you down.
