1940's Newsclip of the Coast Guard Resuming Ice Patrol Work

Sun Aug 14, 2011 12:03 pm

Just got this. It's a 1940's news story of the USCG resuming IIP work. It would have been right after the war. Nice inflight shot of a classic aircraft. The ad at the beginning is a short one.

Wow, those Berg's are huge! I agree it was very cool seeing a wartime configured Liberator (Privateer?) doing peace time patrol's.

Ya...those are big icebergs.

I'm not sure if that is a CG plane. I check our CG Aviation Association Website and some of our's had the tall single vert fin. The one in this news clip has the doubles. I have an email in to our CG aircraft expert to clarify this.

Ok...my CG aircraft guy got back with me. Here's the deal on that aircraft in the news clip.

YEP.....!

You had a total of four PB4Y-1s. The 4 were received form the USN starting on 6/16/45 with the
receipt of a glass-nosed USAAF B-24D, 42-40440 with a BUNO of 32041. It was returned to
the Navy 6 weeks later on 7/31/45.

The second machine, a B-24M, 44-41888, received on 7/1/45, as BUNO 90137. It remained
in USCG service through 1/22/47 when it was turned over to the WAA. It spent its entire career
assigned to VP-6(CG) at Argentina.

The third machine was a B-24J, 44-41170, received on 7/15/45, as BUNO 38881. This machine
remained with the USCG, assigned to VP-6(CG) until it was turned over to the WAA on 1/22/47.

The 4th and final airframe was a B-24J, 41-41288, received on 8/23/45, as BUNO 38901. It
remained with the USCG until it was returned to the USN on 10/30/45.

From what I could piece together, 32041 & 38901 were utilized for "type" training while 38881 and
90137 served actively with the remnants of VP-6(CG) until they were replaced by the PB-1G aircraft
for the ice patrol mission along with the termination of VP-6(CG) and the transition to CGAS
Argentia.
