M35 / M30 incendiary cluster bombs ? What do they look like?

Mon Jul 04, 2011 11:03 pm

I am going to attempt to build several full scale NON functioning Vietnam era M35 cluster bombs for an A26 restoration. All that I have to go by so far is a very primitive sketch. I would greatly appreciate any photos or measurements that any of you could provide me with. I have no idea what one looks like.

I've never heard of the "Mk. 35" nor can I find references to it. I have found references to the M35 which is a thermite/incendiary cluster munition. Is this what's you're speaking of?

If so - http://www.ammunitionpages.com/download ... %20M35.pdf

Looks a lot like other similar cluster munitions of the late WWII, Korea, and Vietnam era with a configuration similar to that of other munitions like the CBU-24

You are correct. It is M35. The link to the ammunition pages is what I already have, but it just gives me a very primitive drawing and not a lot to work off of. I'm glad you spotted my error. I've edited my post.

I think if you use the M24 as a reference for the appearance and just modify to have a flat nose and the shown scoop/vent, then I think you'll be pretty close. Those drawings are pretty decent since they give the dimensions that you can compare against the M24 casing.

I'll give that a try.

I'm still not having any luck finding photos of what these bombs look like. Surely someone has actual photos instead of drawings of these things. Are there any museums out there that might have one that I can contact?

Have you tried contacting the USAF air ordinance museum in Floridas panhandle near Ft. Walton? GOOGLE it up, looks like if you could drop it, they've got one-

Yes, that does help a lot! I had the black outline drawing, but I had never seen any of the other views. This is a great start now. I would still like to see what the tail end of the M35 looks like and what it looks like on the opposite side. Thank you for the pictures!
I will try calling the USAF Armament Museum tomorrow and see what they might have as well.

I'm still not having any luck finding any actual photographs of an M35 Bomb. I did find out that an M35 uses an M30 case. Evidently the M30 was used for several variations. I suppose then I need details and pictures of M30 cases. I need details of the fuse mechanism especially. The sketches that I have come across help, but nothing is as helpful as a photograph. Surely someone took a picture of one these devils at some point.

I couldn't get your link to work. A photo would be great.

Perhaps Davem was trying to link one of these photos or illustrations...
