Jasta 30 Pfalz DIIIa painting

Thu Jun 09, 2011 9:59 am

Here's a little non-commissioned piece that I just finished. It's a Pfalz DIIIa of Jasta 30. Jasta 30 is one of the few units to be equipped exclusively with the Pfalz. Its aircraft carried a distinct orange diamond on the fuselage and empennage, and many carried some sort of variation of a striped design on the fuselage. This particular machine is one that I spotted way in the background of a photo taken at the group's airfield.

For the finished work I chose a complimentary color scheme leaning heavily on blue and yellow/orange with just a narrow range of red and green in between. It's a small piece- 8.5" x 13". At that small size I decided to keep the background loose and painterly.

Well done! Love the choice of aircraft...that's a very pretty plane. Salute!

Delightful finished product, Russell. Since I have neither the skill nor patience to accomplish something like this, I let the drool flow freely.

I must admit your post motivated me to google more on the Pfalz DIII and DIIIa. Always an education around here.

Thanks guys. :drink3:

Dan, the Pfalz was a pretty little bird. Very graceful looking.
