Me and a few guys are heading down to the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum this weekend. I will post pics when we get back. Any Wixer's in the area. We will be at the front doors when they open Saturday.

I'm going to take a lot of pics. This is my first time there. I'm looking forward to seeing the 17. I wish I could go to the Virginia airshows but we have planed this trip for 8 months. Some of the guys are coming from other states. I'm already doing two things at once. I'm setting up a big display for the Boyscouts this weekend, and then going to the museum.

The museum was great. I liked reading all the history about the mighty eighth air force. The b-17 is coming along very nicely. They are doing a great job. They where working on getting the nav light to work on the right wing. The chapel was great to. Looking forward to going down again soon.

Saw a B-17 tail turret in the American History Museum on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Does it belong on the Eighth Air Force Museum's aircraft?

The turret has been highly polished but has a fake floor and sits in a "Rosie the Riveter" display:

I think it does belong with the Eighth A.F. Museum B-17. When I saw the turret at the Smithsonian a while back I asked the same question here on WIX and it was confirmed. Shame to see them seperated...

The tail had been drug on its guts at one time in its life which is why the bottom was rebuilt. The nose bulkhead has also been cut down from a correct G model frame one.You can just make out the very edges of the flanged lightning holes. Also the lower nose has been reskinned.I hope they get a stinger tailgun for it as that is what City of Savannah had at the the time she was lost.Kudos to all involved getting that airplane to the museum.

The B-24 at Barksdale sure would look nice sitting next to the B-17!

Here's the link to the photos I took in 2009, it's cool to see how far she has come in that time.
