Quick questions - AAF shoulder insignia on flying jackets

Wed May 11, 2011 9:59 pm

G'day folks,

Just have a couple of questions relating to AAF shoulder insignia on A-2, B-3 and B-6 jackets.

I read that the star and wings insignia (Hap Arnold emblem?) was authorised for use on the shoulder in March 1943. I understand that on June 25, 1943, this was replaced with the numbered Air Force insignia. Does this mean that on flying jackets, those which had the un-numbered insignia would have had these removed and replaced with the owner's particularly-numbered insignia? Was there a situation where there'd be the earlier insignia on one shoulder with the numbered AF insignia on the other? I'm referring to flying jackets here, not the uniform tunics.

Secondly, what was the convention with shoulder insignia on B-3 and B-6 jackets.

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Matt
