The Dragon and It's Tail: B-24 Video

Sat May 07, 2011 8:21 am

This is a video that was shot some years back (2002) at Felts Field in Spokane, Washington. At the time this B-24 had a rather flamboyant livery that is unfortunately seen no more. Perhaps it was a casualty of the Politically Correct?

A nice airplane with an even nicer paint job! :D

Great video of one of my favorite warbirds..thanks for posting! I'm stille bummed that I missed seeing "Witchcraft" and "Ol' 927" flying together at Thunder Over Michigan a few years ago.

Nothing so sinister. The Collings B-24 was repainted as "Witchcraft" around 2005. She needed to be stripped anyway for maintenance purposes (it was the first time the paint had been completely stripped since her inititial restoration in the early 90s.) I understand the choice of the current paint scheme had nothing to do with political correctness..she had flown as "Dragon and his Tail" for a half-dozen years or so in honor of the Pacific B-24 veterans, so the Collings Foundation chose to repaint her in an 8th AF scheme to honor those who fought in the ETO. Before "Dragon," she was painted as "All American," a 15th AF aircraft based in Italy. I suppose in a few more years the markings will be changed again..since she's the only flying B-24J, I think it's cool that they change the paint scheme every so often. The BBMF does the same with their Lancaster.

Cool video. It's nice to see the Dragon again. I miss that scheme.

Too bad the Weeks B-24J isn't currently airworthy, although it would make an excellent candidate...
