CBI C-47 Nose Art Weekend at Grissom Air Museum

Thu Apr 28, 2011 10:53 am

I'm heading down tomorrow to paint the nose art on the C-47 at the Grissom Air Museum and I'm really looking forward to do my part in honoring Jim Haus and all the CBI veterans with the repaint of the C-47.

If you want to see pics as I go, you can do so on my Facebook page and click "like", as I can update that with my phone. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until next week when I'm back to a computer. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Django-S ... 7612120651

Or maybe Chris or Rob can post a few pics too.

I'm sure it will bring back a few memories of Gary, as without his help and friendship, I wouldn't be in this position at all.

I am very honored to have friends like Chad, Zachary and the many others that have worked on getting this C-47 completed. I Can not wait to see Chad's art work on this plane.

Zack if it is not set up, Chad will be able to stand on the bodies that will be laying around it.

Please do. Chad and I will be out there most of the day Sat. All depends on how fast Chad paints, and the weather. Stop by!

CBI markings? Wait..I thought all C-47s were required by law to have Invasion Stripes!

Fantastic nose art! I wish I lived closer to the museum and had the time to volunteer.

Very nice!

Any further information/pictures of the original C-47 that bore the nose-art? What serial number did it carry on the tail, what insignia did it wear, since it was a CBI bird did it have the long air intakes that extended to the front of the cowls?

So on/so forth ...

I have a built but unmarked WWII C-47 (Italeri 1/72 kit) that I put the extended air intakes on, and would LOVE to be able to print out this nose art and use it on the aircraft if there's a match in configuration ...

Garth,
We have no photos of the air intake on his airplane, but the others in the same group have the extended intakes. That would lead me to believe his did as well. It carried the OD over gray scheme, and the nose art above as well as a question mark on the tail above the serial number, also the air commando stripes. Just like this model by franklin mint

Well starting off we found that our guess on the size of the girl was a bit off. We were to large. So the template that Chad had made was too big because he based it off of our measurements which were of the whole panel. SO did Chad give up? No, instead he drew the girl free hand with chalk, and then went to work. Make no mistakes, this nose art was applied just like the real ones in WWII. Free hand, and outside. It was amazing to be there for this. THe pics will speak for themselves. We can never fully thank him for doing this!

Chad's Uncle came along who was a C-47 Flight Engineer. This is him at his old station on our plane.

When he came to work he had his supplies in a WWII style tool box, he had a radio to play 40's music on, and wore period clothing. It was amazing. Visitors to the museum took notice. At one point the first night, as the sun was setting people were parking in the parking lot and just watching. It was really something.

Sweet! Chris, is the C-47 going to continue to stay outside? If so, part of me is sad because it will ultimately fade Chad's work. On the other hand, after a year or two outside, it will probably have that classic WWII weathered look, which will actually look pretty darn cool. Just curious.

Either way, way to go! What a neat paint job!

Great work guys!

Is the C-47 dedication still on for May 13? The website shows the date and it says all day, but I'm assuming there will be a certain time for the ceremony and flyovers? I'm going to have to take some time off work to come over there so I was hoping find out more about the day's schedule.
