Sad News Steven Detch

Wed Feb 23, 2011 4:22 pm

I understand that Steve Detch, owner of Vintage Aircraft Inc in Woodstock GA has passed away after a battle with Cancer. Steve's shop got the B-25 "Wild Cargo" back flying. I extend my condolences to all affected by his passing.

Really sorry to hear that. I remember being at Air Acres back in the early 1990s with him, Bill Johnson and Sam Lyons. Steve did a few interesting airplanes. Wild Cargo was piled up in the corner of the hangar, He had a Stearman, among others. He also had a TigerCat (where did that one go?). Even had the Smurf Truck (a Smurf Blue Land Toyota FJ-40 Landcruiser with a pickup bed on it and big tires).

Bye Steve.....

I was sad to find out Steve passed. He was a character if there ever was a character. He worked with my father in another industry and I spent a summer working for Steve when I was a teenager. I worked on "Wild Cargo". I personally stripped out the old insulation, and every last drop of old paint from the nose section of that plane. I also sprayed the primer. I had never before, or since, so much enjoyed such a terribly hot, acid burned, dirty, messy, awful job. It was great. And I'll always remember Steve for giving me the opportunity to work on that plane(and giving a 19 year old slacker a job for a summer!).
