HAMILTON AIRSHOW returns in 2011

Wed Feb 09, 2011 6:58 pm

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, "Canada's Flying Museum", is bringing back the Hamilton Airshow in 2011. For those of you who remember the Hamilton Airshow of the past, THIS IS NOT THE SAME SHOW. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum started the Hamilton Airshow back in 1975 and for the re-introduction of the show, we are going back to our roots as the entire show will feature vintage aircraft. In fact, the 2011 show will be used as a "dry run" for a much larger show being planned for 2012 that will celebrate the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's 40th Anniversary.

The Hamilton Airshow 2011 will feature over 40 vintage aircraft from such organizations as Vintage Wings of Canada, The Fighter Factory, Commemorative Air Force, Canadian Aerobatic Team, Canadian Harvard Aircraft Association, Russell Air Group, The Great War Flying Museum, 1941 Historical Aircraft Group and Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

For more information, visit http://airshow.warplane.com/hamilton-airshow-2011.aspx . Please note that the aircraft listing is not yet complete and several more aircraft are to be added in the future.

WOW! This is my kind of airshow. I think I'll give myself a Father's Day present and drive in from Detroit. The aircraft lineup looks great. A couple more P-51s would be nice!

Back in the 70's and early 80's, the show was run by CWH and was an excellent Airshow. I worked for CWH at the time and it was a wonderful experience meeting and working with many of the top airshow people
Th show was participated by many Canadian and American Vintage and Warbird owners from all over N America. Plus some of the top Military acts Blue Angels Snowbird etc
Unfortunately it got too big and expensive for CWH to run at that time and in order to keep it going the Hamilton Airshow committee was formed. The first couple of shows were OK but they started becoming more geared towards the modern fighter jets rather than the vintage aircraft.
It was felt at the time that this would attract the younger geneartions but it did not.
History have proven that most people young and old are more attracted to the older types that the jets.
This and the fact that the committee started selling prime showline spots to corporate sponsors ruined the show for the average attendees. All along the showline were corporate tents blocking everyones view. The show no longer catered to the average viewer.
Another change from the earlier shows was the lack of ground displays. There use to be all kinds of organizations with displays in and out of the hangers but all this ended with the city taking over the show.
Hopefully, there are enough people left at CWH that remember how the show was run in it's successful/golden years and will learn from the Airshow Committees mistakes.
CWH is a great Museum. They went thru some lean years but over the past 10 yrs , the current Management ,Staff and Volunteers have turned things around and got many of the aircraft back in the air. They are Canada's #1 Flying Museum!
I wish them all the luck in a successful rebirth of the Hamilton Airshow.
Last week we we invited to be part of the show. We will have both Fleet Finches there.
I for one am looking forward to participating in the show.
Just like old times again :D

I couldn't agree with you more Cam. Will be good to see you guys down from Guelph.
I am looking forward to the way things used to be.
The 2012 show promises to be even better! I haven't seen CAF B-24 in a lot of years. I am looking forward to seeing it redone.

Time to start donating plasma to afford this one. A road trip to Hamilton looks like it needs to happen this year. What a great lineup! My Dad and I have been considering making the trip there for the Father's Day weekend event one of these years and this looks like the perfect year to make the trip since it's becoming an airshow. The Lysander and Swordfish are two aircraft I've wanted to see for awhile, and this seems like the perfect opportunity to do that since I won't make Oshkosh. It would be cool if the Jet Aircraft Museum and Tiger Boys got involved as well, but the lineup as it is looks solid. Lots of heavies, enough "little friends" for escorts, and some trainer types I haven't seen before like the Fleet types.

Side note: anyone know how long it typically takes to get a passport?

There will be be three Fleet Finches appearing at the show .
One from CWH (static at present) , one from the Tigerboys and one from Hamilton Aero Club.
Watch for updates on the Airshow site.
The latter two will be c/out formation fly-bys. Two Fleet Finches in formation is a rare sight.
However , at the Yellow Wings event at CWH in August, there is potential for us to have possible 5 in formation.
That has not happened in Canada since WW2
Should be a real interesting year at CWH.

I like how they even picked the same weekend that it was on in the Good Old Days. An encouraging sign that those great shows of the 70s to mid 80s are remembered.

Good luck to all involved.

Probably not this year (The wife and I would need to get passports) but 2012 might be do-able. Sounds fantastic!

On the poster I see a certain red-nosed dual-control African-Desert-Colours fighter. Good news for me!

I remember participating in this show in the 70s. I was dropping jumpers on weekends then to build time, and the jump club had a slot at the airshow, and wanted me to come along and spot the exit point for them. I got to ride in a DC-3 that day and toss the streamer and all that. Good fun!

I remember the streamer and the jumpers well :) Very interesting that you were the "streamer guy" ) Vividly recall watching for the streamer which was a sign that the jumpers were not far behind.
Glad to see the P-40 will be there.
It is just fantastic to see all the Museums coming together on the various events planned this year.
Harmony between all the groups is a good thing. :!:
We "Warbirders" will all be seeing alot of each this summer

It took me three weeks to get my passports when we went to New Zealand. We went down to the post office and set up an interview appointment. A few days later we did the interview and paperwork and three weeks later they arrived in the mail. Pretty simple process actually. You should have plenty of time.

It would be great to see Jerry Yagens Hurricance and Spitfire attend. Three Spits and three Hurricanes with Lancaster....Nice!On another note, anyone know if Vintage wings still owns their project Hurricane? I don't see it listed on the VWOC website.
