The scheme came from a German publication.
As you know Hartmann used the 'Tulip' emblem on his aircraft in WW2. When he took command of JG71 post war he introduced the "tulip" to his steeds....Canadair Sabres. Most Luftwaffe groups operated "Piggies" as communications hacks during that period. It still features from time to time on their F-4's
