Looking for a certain magazine

Thu Dec 16, 2010 8:54 am

Does anyone have a copy of Warbirds International from the fall of 1984. There were some pics in there of Miss Liberty Belle our B-17. We are just trying to see if someone can scan us the pictures, or send us the magazine. Thankyou.

I'll be home tomorrow and will look. Do you happen to remember what was on the cover?

Excellent article. The nose art is "outstanding" on so many levels! :D

But there is one minor caveat that should be noted. The girl in the original sketch is referenced several times as a "Varga" girl....whether you use Varga or Vargas...neither applies to her.

She is not an Alberto Vargas girl by any stretch. Vargas did a very finite grouping of pinups that appeared in Esquire. Miss Belle--as seen here--is not one of them. Aside from the fact that AV did not do any 'full monty" pinups while at Esquire, the general figure and pose is not even close to any of the Vargas work of the period. All Varga(s) girls wear clothes--and as a testament to his talent, the art reviewer from The New Yorker wrote in 1940, "Mr. Vargas could make a girl look naked if she was rolled up in a rug..."

The design concept is very neat, though!

Too cool! Way to jog some brain cells...I think I have a copy of that magazine around somewhere as well. Sure would have been swell to have given Miss Huskey a hand with her work, had she been dressed in her 40s outfit...dang...wasn't stationed at Grissom till 1985 :( John Crume is no longer with us, but he certainly did have some stories to tell of the work he and so many others put into the Belle. John is certainly smiling on ya Chris with all of the work you are putting into his old girl! Had a chance to talk to Marion yet?
