NMUSAF Beaufighter status

Wed Dec 15, 2010 7:42 pm

Quick question - has the Beaufighter in the NMUSAF had the last bits finished? Last info I had showed that the control surfaces weren't fitted.

Also, I understand it's in the colours of Captain Harold Augspurger, who I believe is associated with the museum - can anyone confirm? (viewtopic.php?t=9319)

Thanks in advance,

It's now complete. I can get you some pics next week. And you are correct he is a museum volunteer.

MD, many thanks, and yes, pics would be welcome! I'd like to see it looking 'right'.

Glad to hear the scheme's pilot's still going well.

I've always had a soft spot for the beaufighter and painted this oil painting last year in celebration of the (almost) forgotten part they played in the strugle against the Japanese in WWII

RAAF Beaufighters played a major role in anti shipping missions off PNG, including in the Battle for the Bismark Sea.

It's funny how these things come about. I was going through some boxes at my workshop yesterday and came across a few bits of this very aircraft an ammo bin cover and a few small bits. These missed being packed by the then owner in 1988 and when presented to him didn't really care. And I couldn't bring myself to tossing them as he suggested.so 23 years later here they still are.
Cheers,
Ash.

Smiles, well I have heard of people starting Wirraway projects with less than that Ash, can you undertake a scratch built Beau after the P-40's, Mustangs, Boomerangs and Wackett are finished and some space becomes available?

Its a shame this aircraft left Australia, it should have instead ended up in the AWM, but at least it survives and is on display, if only we could get it back into its own colours.
