What F-86's are currently under restoration to flying condition?
Thu Nov 25, 2010 8:37 pm
There's an F-86 in Bozeman, Montana that's just about ready to fly.
It's going to be painted in the old "Minute men" Display team colors.

That should be a beauty! Maybe Michael will be able to get this one for Thunder Over Michigan in 2012.

Wow! That looks very nice!
I know there are two projects here in the Fort Worth area that just need an infusion of (lots of) cash to fly.

Mr. Luther,
Probably a better question is How many F-86's are flying, or how many F-86's are airworthy?
Al Hansen has one in Mojave, that is airworthy, but i have not seen fly recently.
The one in Bozman is probably N87FS (Ex-Tracore).
(Wayett Fuller crashed N86FS the other Ex-Tracore).
There is the FJ that belongs to Doc SUGDEN (also has Mig-15 & T-2).
I used to know where most of the F-86's were, but have not been following them lately.
Probably the best source for F-86 news is Duncans F-86 site:
http://f-86.tripod.com/He has written several books on F-86's and keeps track of them world wide.
If you ask him a question, I am sure he will respond (he always has to me).
You can also check the FAA database at:

Avn-Tech
F-86L, 53-994
1 ea, J-47 in the can
F-86A/E/F blueprints and most manuals issued for F-86's in my collection.
I also have Ex-Tracore parts (F-86 & F-100) and some ground support equipmet for F-86's.

I think that the Friedkin's had one being finished up at Chino that had been a civil flyer in the past.

Sorry, duplicate post.....

The short list of fliers:
FU-012 Chino Planes of Fame, F model
FU-461 Tom Friedkin, Mk 6
FU-201 Miami Museum, F model
FU-178 Golden Apple Operations UK, A model
FU-666 N860AG Belleville Il (just sold?), F model
FU-675 N80FS Mig Fury Fighters, Mk 6
FU-986 N188RL Warbird Heritage Foundation, F model
C-GSBR Hawk One Sabre Vintage Wings of Canada Museum, Mk 6
N186PJ Canadian Blue Devils (Classic Aviation Museum), Mk 6
A94-983 CA-27 Avon Sabre - Black Diamonds Temora Museum Australia
N87FS Bozeman MT (soon to fly again after paint), Mk 6
There are others listed as airworthy and probably could fly but don't, like Al Hansens Mk 6 in Mojave and N86F of Indiana (Tom Wood's F model flown as FU-849)

We would like to do an F-86 gathering at THUNDER OVER MICHIGAN sometime in the future, but I'm not totally familiar with all the currently active flying F-86's, or all the ones that are under restoration to active flying condition.

Overchroming.
Why is it so hard to finish the aircrafts "as they were" ?
Fri Nov 26, 2010 10:28 am
I'm not sure that's over polished on a Minute Men jet. I know the intakes were EXTREMELY highly polished (if not chromed) on their F-86's and I'm pretty sure they polished the rest of the jet as well.
Either way, there is a huge difference between chrome and polish. That is polish.
BTW, here's the only "good" picture I can find of the Minute Men, you can tell that the intake and rudder are definitely polished, but because of the quality of the image, it's hard to tell if the rest of the plane is.

Anyone know what happened to the Sabre Ed Shipley used to own? What about the one Dale Snodgrass used to fly in the "Skyblazers" markings?
Fri Nov 26, 2010 12:28 pm
I think that the ex Shipley Sabre is in Chino getting worked on from pictures I have seen posted on WIX. I also believe the Skyblazers Sabre has been parked at the Valiant Air Command Museum. Not sure if it will fly again.

Shipley's former Sabre (FU-461) was at Chino getting new fuel tanks/bladders installed and the Skyblazers jet (FU-201) is located at the VAC like Sabremech mentioned and it does fly 2 or 3 times a year.
Cavenaugh Museum has a jet too, but has been down for an engine for at least three years now.

CAPFlyer, I must say you're probably right on this one.
