DC-3 and Tug @ Fredericksburg (Texas) Airport-New Pictures

I had seen the DC-3 from a distance a couple of years ago and had a chance for a closer view last weekend. It was made in 1944 and the FAA website shows it with turboprop engines which it clearly doesn't have.






Then, on the way back to the car ran across this tug.

i was there last november. i went inside the hanger hotel and ask about it. they said it belonged to the owner of the hotel, and that one of the engines went bad, and it has been sitting there ever since. www.hangarhotel.com/ is the hotel's web site. overall a nice looking plane, but could use some T.L.C.

The "tug" is a combination tug and ground power unit. Southwest Services at Ellington has been using one for years.

Love the "camoflauged" tug. What year was a tug like that made?

Don't be fooled by the "N" number on that plane. Obviously it doesn't exist. Probably has something to do with its' somewhat illicit employment a few years back. It is the sister ship to the our ship and only flew to Fredericksburg by borrowing one of our engines. It is in pretty bad shape and will probably never fly again. The last I heard the Hotel had it for sell. $30,000 I think but don't quote me.

I flew 21Z from '92-97 for IFL group out of Pontiac,Mi, she was purchased from Atkins a Tejas based,freight dog outfit back in '91, she was a former R4D,powered by the more powerful 1830-94 engines featuring 1350 hp a side as opposed to the 1200hp generated by the standard 1830-90,and 92 powerplants. She was a good and faithful ship,and served us well in every clime and place,from southern Ontario to the Mexican border. I do not know her history after she left us. It is a shame to see her derelict. rest well,old hoss !

Vacationed in Fredericksburg again last weekend and went out to the airport to see if the DC3 was still there. I am am assuming this is the same plane and it has been painted and moved.










The tug is still there and in the same condition, except for the overgrowth removed.

N8021Z / 21 (cn 13176) Officially still registered as cn 20444 (ex N5PG,C-FPAG), which indeed carried N8021Z from 1979 until it disappeared in 1981. Then circa 1988 the registration was illegally re-used on the aircraft in the photo, cn 13176 (ex N61724), apparently without informing the FAA. By 2009 it still had faded remains of its former registration N61724 visible on the fin.
