Kankakee local legend is on to Blue Skies

DARN, DARN, DARN!
Just received notice from Mr. Lock's son that another of my father's 330th as passed! Col. Vivian Lock died on 2 October 2010. He just celebrated his 90th birthday last month and had just returned from his 98th ARS reunion in Branson, MO. He was as sharp as a tack and I shall miss him dearly. He flew, B-24's off of the Aleutians, then B-29's (City of Kankakee) off of Guam, then KC-97's in Korea and for over 10 years out of Lincoln, NE.

He had a great tale of watching three yellow nosed P-40's mock dogfight (showing off) in the Aleutians when one of them smashed into the other two. The remaining P-40 lost it's spinner in the crash and the sound it made while landing was remarkable.

Another was a raid to Paramushiro iinvolving B-25's and B-24's on 11 Sept 1943 with 10 out of 20 aircraft lost. He said it was horrific.

Through my 330th BG website, I was able to reunite a Japanese man and Mr. Lock, who, 60 years prior was dropping incendiary bombs on this gentlemen's (then a small boy) town of Kumagaya, Japan. It was to be the last air raid of WWII.
