The movie threads got me thinking after I watched Always on TV the other night. Alot of people here on WIX have been in on making some of the movie featuring warbirds, and just wondered if anyone had anything to do with this movie? Any pics or good stories from it? Thanks

I didn't go up for the filming but I did construct some camera mounts for attaching cameras to the A-26.

Such a great movie....the one that got me to learn to fly....gotta be some stories out there somewhere about Goodman cracking folks up on the set or something....would love to know where that airbase in the middle of the woods was, looked pretty cool.

There was a guy at POF EAST that was the one of the head mech's on th 26's.He was with pof for many years to come . Wish I could remember his name. Tanker 57 sold to Pond later.

One of the A-26's still had the Always markings on it just recently. There was talk of the new owner keeping the "Fire Eaters" markings. Anyone know where that one is and if it is still painted that way? Rich what can you tell us about the camera mounts. I heard that alot of the scenes with forest fires in it, were the real deal as a huge fire broke out while they were filming.

The 'woods' -forest airport scenes were at Libby MT, I believe.
The high desert scenes were at Ephrata WA, a former bomber training base.

Maybe Jim Dale.
Now with Rod Lewis IIRC.

When the film came out I wrote Speilburg's production company and received a couple of pages of production notes. I have them and a film poster somewhere....
Yes, it was filmed at Libby. I recall reading in Air Classics at that time that real fire bomber pilots were amazed when they saw the airport set. Libby wasn't a fire bomber base, but they sure made it look like one.
Ephrata is still there...for a history of the base, it's in Vol 1 of the Forgotten Fields of America series by Lou Thole.

I read in IMDB that the house for Holly Hunter's character that was at the end of the runway was just a shell, and is still there.

Photos on Google Maps of the Libby airport don't show any structures near the ends of the runway. There are some items on the east side of the runway north of the ramp that look like they might be fire bomber related. Photos are not real clear.

The house's setting was at the end of the runway at Ephrata. This was a shell. Dunno if its still there.
