Scud Launch! Shuttleworth Scud II flies

Tue Sep 07, 2010 2:36 pm

On the evening Saturday 4th September in poor light and blustery winds the Abbott-Baynes Scud II glider flew at the Shuttleworth Collection. A previous attempt had been made in April and had ended in a somewhat interesting 30 second flight when the sailplane got caught in the turbulence behind the Tug.
This time the flights were much more successful. The lessons from the first attempt were well and truly learned and 3 flights were undertaken.
Built in 1932 the Scud is Britains oldest flying glider and is a very worthy addition to the collection

It’s a lovely aircraft, it looks like a cross between a Kayak and a Flying Fish but its really graceful in the air.

Finally, that’s his happy face…honest!

Now the test programme is complete its hoped to fly it at shows probably in a segment with the Collections EoN Primay (SG38), wouldn’t it be nice to have Britains oldest glider and oldest powered aircraft in the air together!

What type of tractor is that in the background?

Ford 8N or 9N I can't remember which or how to tell them apart anymore.

I've got an 8N, but the photo doesn't quite match what I have. Maybe a Fordson?

Found a better pic online, someone there said it was a Ferguson

The back end looks kind of like a 8N but the hood isn't...

Okay after spending more time than I would like to admit looking... I'm going to say its a Ferguson 20 with a modified hood (added fan protection)

How cool is that! Great to see vintage gliders in action and the Scud is a real treat! Thanks Nick!

Not a Campbell helmet. I reckon it's a standard RAF issue helmet (an Alpha I think). The oxy mask would be very useful for keeping the wind noise out of the microphone - note there is no windscreen.

The helmet is a no brainer for this kind of aircraft however silly it looks, the mask was fitted so you may as well wear it rather than have it flapping around.

I love the discussion about Tractors, its cracking me up. Come over to the UK i'll buy you a beer and organise a ride on the fergy for you.
