Looks like a more modern day "Lady Be Good" story. Pretty interesting.

I seem to remember reading that the engines were salvaged by interested parties, but nothing else.
I have fantasies of half-buried Luftwaffe aircraft still sitting out in the desert somewhere--like an Me110 or a Stuka.

It's still there. A 4x4 expedition went past it a few years ago. Stripped from stem to stern of all instruments and such, fuel tanks are out and most of the wiring. What's left of the three engines that were still on after the crash are still there.
It cropped up on a South African forum a couple of years ago.

There was a lengthy article about 1716 in Flypast as I recall. She was heading cross-country to Great Britain when the flight went haywire. After the accident equipment was removed from her and used as spares for 1722 if I remember correctly.
