This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

I mean no disrespect towards the memory of Mr Baranaskas or his family as I am sure they are still healing from his loss. Was just curious if there are any plans to re-build his P-40 or if there is not enough of it left to even try.
Again, I do not want to start any flaming comments nor any disrespect meant. I met him and his son at Thunder a few years ago and both seemed to be perfect gentlemen.

Was the P-40 recovered?

Heated discussions are to be avoided on WIX at all cost, they are to be feared even more than fatal accidents, civilian bombings, economic disasters, etc.
Leave those heated discussions to the other forums like Oshkosh 365 where members are mature enough to handle them.
Let's keep WIX pure and focus on the important things like whether a serial number in 1940 ended in 0 or o.

I don't have any direct knowledge of the wreckage of this P-40. However if it hit the water at high speed and was immersed in salt water the damage would be major, plus the recovery if any would be difficult and expensive, depending on depth, and weather etc.
I did speak to Dick Hansen at EAA Osh who owned and cared for this plane for years.
The accident was sad, of course, but it seems that it is similar to the majority of fatal warbird accidents that I have known of in my 25 years in warbirds, except for being in the ocean or a P-40.
We have a group called FAST, which is supposed to be about formation and safety training. There is lot's of info on formations, rights and wrongs, but very little on real safety.
The majority of warbird fatal accidents for decades have been some type of low altitude manuevering or acro, but you'd never know it by what is emphasized at these type of meetings. I think perhaps we hope it only happens to the other guy.
