Flying Legends Spitfire Tailchase from the Pilots seat

Sometimes in-cockpit cameras can make flying an aircraft in an air display look relatively easy. This one, taken from Spitfire MH434 of The Old Flying Machine Company at the 2010 Flying Legends Airshow, shows just how much hard work it can be. Strong winds made the Spitfire tailchase even more challenging than usual. Many thanks to Lee Proudfoot for letting us put the cameras in.

So I'm sittin' here flyin' it with him. Little bit of stick. Little bit of rudder. (Well, I can dream, can't I?)
That's a waaayyy cool video. There are probably about 6 or 7 more Spits up there with him. It'll give ya' goose pimples to watch the 7 or 8 Spits and then the 7 or 8 Mustangs do that routine over the field.
We'll be there next year to see it live.

That's not work, although you may at times feel the g forces and it may be hot. You won't notice the noise as such, because that which a Rolls Royce makes is Merlin music, it just is the sound of good smooth power.

It's an honor to sit in that little cockpit and experience flight that way, and especially to do it where Bader, Johnson, and so many other pilot's did it when it was for real.

I DID notice that! It's amazing what a tight turn radius and turn rate the Spit has! I never thought about the Spit being so good in turns until the first time that I saw Stephen Grey doing his aerobatic demo in one. Truly amazing!

I grabbed the last 2009 one in the main store at Duxford this year but forgot to check format. It was PAL, not NTSC. Fortunately I could play it on the computer so it wasn't a total wash The Spitfire tail chase was fantastic, to see 8 in the air at once was a treat for the eyes and ears. But... according to the Friends of Duxford newsletter I received last week, The Battle of Britain Air Show coming up Sept. 4, 17 Spitfires are booked to attend!!
