Abbotsford Airshow this weekend!

I'm fortunate to be taking a C-17 to Abbotsford this Thursday for the airshow. We will be doing the demo for the show. Yall come holler if you see me roaming around (or in hanger 13 late at night)

Airshow's tomorrow!!!! I'm excited. I've got my cameras ready! I can't wait to see the old Lancaster again. It's been too long. Hopefully I'll run into a few WIXers too.

Saw the show yesterday...lots of really impressive aircraft to see !! The lanc became the bait and switch victim though, we got there hoping to see it fly at around 3:30 as advertised, so we thought that we could get inside for a tour but they were prepaing to fly at around 2:30 so the tours had been cut off for the day. They rolled her out to the taxi way and then announced at the last minute that she would be closing the show at 5:30 instead. Not sure if there was a mechanical issue that had to be dealt with. All the same, what an impressive aircraft to actually see in flight !! If you have never heard four merlins cranking it up in front of you before, you are in for a treat !! Beautiful thunder doesnt even come close !! Be warned...... get ready for some really tacky music being played throughout the show. Loud and lousy, top gun style ! It gets better for the older birds though, some good period music was played. Bring a hat and lots of water as it was very hot yesterday, and will be hotter today. The canadian aircrews were very friendly and accomodating, meeting some of them gave me a renewed sense of respect for what it is they do for all of us on a daily basis. All in all a good show. My camera is crap, sorry no good pics to share.

Okay, after a while... I've finally found time to put my pictures onto my computer, put go through them, put some onto Photobucket, and then finally put them up here on WIX. Please pardon the delay.

If I do say so, the airshow was pretty good! The weather was amazing; stinkin' hot and not a cloud in the sky! Lots of jet fighters, lots of transports, and a fairly good group of warbirds. But, as usual, it was practically impossible to get good pictures of the warbirds except for when they were doing their fly-bys. I wish they could have a better layout so that people wishing to take a closer look at them wouldn't have to be content with taking pictures from several hundred feet away. Safety first, but don't other airshows have a better system?

The performance by John Mohr was breath-taking! I had seen footage on youtube of what he can do, and yes, he did it all again for us with spectacular precision. He definitely put the jet jocks to shame. I can't say enough about this guy. He is one with that Stearman when he flies it. That's a sign of a superb pilot.

Manfred Radius was back at Abbotsford this year with his beautiful little glider. He performed a very nice show, but sadly he missed his inverted banner cut pass. Still a great performance despite that fact.

The USAF Thunderbirds were back to Abby as well, and they put on a great, fast, highly skilled show. It's hard to compare the Snowbirds with the Thunderbirds. Both are incredible teams, and both function with the utmost professionalism. Maybe it's my patriotism, but the Snowbirds stole the show again, but not by much.

It was also an absolute treat to see the Lancaster, and thank you Al, for arranging for me to get in there before the crowds took it over. What an amazing airplane, with a terrific crew, and friendly staff. Everyone from the CWH that I spoke with were really great! I really hope through continued communication with some of the good people at the CWH, we can learn a few things for our little museum here on the West Coast.

Davey, having worked on the Lancaster, if you look at the photo you have of you in the Lancaster you will notice a black cover you stepped over above the bomb bay. Under that cover is a flap actuator that slides left and right. It pulls that large tube pulling on the gray rods to move the flaps up and down.
If you have a photo that you can see both sides clearly the rods are on angles the other way on the opposite side to work on the push and pull of the thru actuator.

I never worked on the Lanc like Mike did but it looks very similar to the T-6. Correct me if I'm wrong Mike but the actuator moves the large tube horizontally either right or left thus closing or opening the angle between the large horizontal tube and the white smaller tubes. As the large tube moves to the right, the angle closes, the flaps retract. As it moves back to the left, the angle opens up, the flaps extend. BY the way Mike, it's quite warm and humid here in Mesa. Great pics too!!

Glad i was there in February and not now! And yes the tube moves left and right closing the angle and pulling or pushing the flap rods.

Hey guys,

thanks for the responses regarding the flap function on the Lanc. How big is the motor that actuates it? I assume it would have to be pretty big for the job it does, or does the way the flap system works in the Lancaster mean that it doesn't need that much power?

Davey, the Lancasters flaps are hydraulically operated by by an actuator more commonly refered to as a flap jack. This flap jack connects by universal joint to push pull tubes on either wing, (the large tube the grey rods connect to). The hydraulic pressure is supplied by two engine driven hydraulic pumps, one on each of the inboard engines.

The actuator has to deploy the flaps primarily, in flight the air pressure blows them back up.

I know this started off as an airshow thread with some great pics but the flap thing has me curious. Obviously there is a airspeed limit on the flap extension but is it airpressure/airspeed alone that blows them back up or is there indeed a raise flaps position on the selector? I know I may sound stupid but I've never had the pleasure of going through a Lanc.
