Anyone involved with the Canadian Air and Space Museum?

Sun Aug 01, 2010 9:49 pm

Hi gang,

my girlfriend and I are headed from here on the West Coast over to Oshawa, Ontario (near Toronto) for a fitness competition my girlfriend is competing in.

I am wondering if there any Wixers in the Oshawa area and if any of you are involved with the Canadian Air and Space Museum at the Oshawa Municipal Airport. It looks like a great museum, and it's only a short walk from where the competition is being held, so I'd be STUPID not to drop in for a visit. They've got a Lancaster under restoration, a full size replica of the Avro Arrow, among many other beautiful airplanes.

So, let me know who's around and perhaps we can meet up.

Peace,

David

The Canadian Air and Space Museum is located in what used to be the De Havilland building in Downsview. It is just north of the 401. I was there years ago and to see a full size Avro Arrow is very, very impressive!! You will not be disappointed to see what they have. Make sure to take pictures and post them here. Enjoy yourself.

I have every intention of taking pictures and posting them on here once I get back. I'm a Lancaster Junky, so I can't wait to get a good look at the one they've got in pieces. And the Arrow will be pretty exciting.

Peace,

David

Great local museum in an historic site (and building). I just turned up with a friend and had a look around, the staff on duty were very helpful. (However I don't think I got a response by e-mail when I wanted to check something for an article.)

As has been said, take plenty of pics!

Cheers,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you'd be in for a long, long walk.

The museum is at Downsview (north end of Toronto) and Oshawa is a city east of Toronto. Definately not within walking distance.

It's not a terribly long drive (about 45-55 minutes) if you have access to a car, depending on the time of day.

Just hop on the 401 and head 50km west to Keele St, north to Sheppard Ave, and then east to Downswiew Park.

You can use Google or something for more detailed directions.

Darn, that puts a spanner into the works a little. Thank you for cluing me into the proper location of the museum.

I had just been looking on google maps around the area that my girlfriend's competition will be and I saw the Oshawa Airport... then I zoomed in, and it was tagged as having the Canadian Air and Space Museum there... so I figured it wasn't lying to me. Sigh, I'll figure out a way of getting to Downsview.

Thank you again rcaf_100. That saved a lot of embarrassment asking around at the FBO's and flying schools at Oshawa Municipal... lol.

Peace,

David

There are two museums on the south side of the Oshawa airport. I'm not sure when they're open.

If you're flying into Pearson and driving to Oshawa (via hwy 401) you'll be passing by Downsview. The museum is about 5 minutes north of the 401.

You may wish to consider renting a car. If you have a free day then you should try to get to Hamilton.

Oshawa is only about a 2 hours to Hamilton.
If you are that close, and that far from the west coast, you should make time to go to the Toronto museum and CWH in Hamilton!

Hi guys and gals,

so, I've got it organized. We're renting a car and going to check out both the CWH and the Canadian Air and Space Museum. A kid in a candy shop, I'll be!!!

I'll share some pictures when I get back to Vancouver. Anyways, I'm off to the airport now.

Peace,

David

Have an awsome time Dave!
Try and sit in the Black CF100 if it is open at CWH and the buffalo as well!
When you go to Canadian air and space museum ask for Andrew Walz he is the project manager for the Lancaster restoration.
