Like most 'ace' discussions, and evaluating the claims is of interest, they miss the point...

... that Germany's greatest ace, a major propaganda subject and scourge of our two-seater observation aircraft was no longer a player. His removal was what mattered, how, being of minor importance, and by whom even less.
